Can you believe it’s already 2024?

I’m excited to share a few tips for navigating the battery industry career-wise for this upcoming year!

2023 was full of new developments in the battery industry. It seemed like every day there was a new announcement of a company getting funding, starting up, or pivoting! Battery Industry is growing globally!

With this growth comes many opportunities, and so, if you are or want to work in this industry, there are many considerations in order to position yourself for success!

In this video, I focused on trends in North America, and especially USA, to provide tips, though this advice can apply to those in other parts of the world as well.

Looking back over the past year In the US, we saw a huge influx of funding into battery industry, especially battery manufacturing and battery recycling, to support the growing electric vehicle industry. This is part of the Department of Energy’s aim to reach net zero carbon emissions for the battery value chain by 2030.

In 2023, I heard again and again how the battery industry is like the wild west! We are at a time when, because the industry is in its early stages, we have the power to ensure that we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past, and we make decisions that create a sustainable and equitable future. As we work to decrease dependence on fossil fuels and toward the net-zero energy goals we have, we have to do things differently! Hello innovation!

We still have a long way to go with many challenges, which also brings about opportunities for all of us to contribute toward shaping this sustainable energy future enabled, in part, by energy storage technologies, like batteries.

As we go into a new year, 2024, interest rates are high, the price of lithium is low, and we just had quite a few company layoffs in the battery industry. Despite this, there is still more opportunity than ever to contribute in this industry.

One last thing before I share these tips, take all of this advice with a grain of salt. You know what’s best for you, and these are only suggestions. At the end of the day, choose your curiosity, wellbeing, health, and happiness!

6 Tips for Battery Industry Career Success in 2024

1. Work in an industry hot-spot, where the action and innovation is happening.
2. Determine whether you’d rather work in a large or small company. Do you prefer to innovate quickly and enable rapid disruption in a smaller start-up, or to slowly change the status quo in a large, established organization?
3. Focus on a type of role where you can use your strengths, but learn an emerging area within the battery industry to establish yourself as a leader in a niche area of expertise.
4. There is an increasing need for people who know how to incorporate sustainable and equitable practices, diversity and inclusion practices, and entrepreneurship into their work, both internally at their company and externally in their project’s broader impacts.
5. Take advantage of informal education resources to learn new things while on the job, like professional societies and online courses.
6. Work with teams that support you! Stay away from teams that put you down and harass you.
