Jill Pestana is a physicist, materials scientist, engineer, and entrepreneur. The majority of her technical experience is in energy materials research and development including electrochemistry and materials characterization and analysis.
Jill currently works as a Senior Staff Scientist at Enevate Corporation where she develops cutting-edge lithium-ion battery technology for vehicle electrification. In the past 3 years, she has filed 11 patents (and counting) on inventions and processes related to battery technology. With over 400 hours of experience operating materials characterization instrumentation, Jill is an expert in materials characterization and analysis, as well as experimental design and troubleshooting.
In September 2020 she founded The STEM Thrive Guides, a business that provides online professional development courses for students and professionals learning and working in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The first courses focus on how to navigate bias, harassment, and discrimination at work and school, and are scheduled to be released in October 2020.
In 2015 and 2012, Jill earned her MS in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), and her BS in Physics with a Minor in Music from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), respectively. Her graduate and undergraduate research focused on developing novel microscopy techniques to investigate electrochemical materials’ properties and functions in fuel cells and batteries. Throughout her college education, Jill contributed toward government research and industry programs during several internships at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, and The Boeing Company in El Segundo and Huntington Beach, CA.
Besides her research and entrepreneurship, Jill consults as an expert in electrochemical technologies (such as batteries), materials engineering, and technical writing and communication. Her previous clients and volunteer consulting work include Lyrid, a serverless cloud computing company, and Seed Consulting Group, which supports non-profits’ sustainability projects. Jill is a keynote speaker on topics including science, outreach, diversity and inclusion, and career success, and shares her joy of science on her YouTube channel “Across the Nanoverse”. Jill also volunteers with Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and has been Chair of SWE – Orange County’s annual Professional Development Conference.
